President’s Column

Communication and collaboration

President Andy Evans on the importance of communication and collaboration

I WOULD have said I was a fairly reasonable communicator. Two eyes, two ears, one mouth, I’ve learnt to listen and observe before opening my mouth.

I’ve learnt to think twice, speak once. I’ve even worked out when to check myself and apply a filter. I suspect our CEO would challenge that last statement though.

I’ve also been lucky enough to play and work with people from many cultures and backgrounds. Based on that experience, I have developed what may be an almost unique Anglo-Dutch directness (much to my sister-in-law’s dismay I suspect),

I’ve witnessed the national stereotypes of character that do play out and are derived from an element of truth. I wonder how close, or not, I am to the stereotype of a middle-aged, middle-class, privileged, balding, white man?

I was honoured to be part of the review team for the Robin Jones award, winners will receive their awards on the 16 September in Liverpool at the institution dinner.

It was after these exploration sessions with our young, passionate, optimistic, resilient, exciting leaders of tomorrow that I was reminded that I am far from finished in learning, understanding, respecting and working out what I should do to help these new entrants realise their hopes and dreams which will come partly from their choice of career and the actions of our institution. I hope we can live up to their expectations and deliver what is right.

I know success starts with 110% R E S P E C T and is followed up with 100% endurance. Come with us!
