An update on the geospatial competencies, highlighting CICES’ commitment to excellence and its dedication to advancing the civil engineering surveying profession

A comprehensive review and update of the core geospatial engineering competencies and specialist engineering surveying competencies has been successfully completed by two dedicated working groups, led by Matt Levine and Richard Cooper, respectively. These revisions ensure the competencies remain relevant to current industry practices, aligning with the rapid advancements in geospatial technologies and methodologies.

Core geospatial engineering competencies

The core geospatial competencies form the foundation of all geospatial disciplines. While some of the recent changes may appear subtle, they are essential for keeping the competencies aligned with the evolving needs of the geospatial profession. These updates reaffirm the institution’s commitment to equipping surveyors with the fundamental skills necessary to support their chosen specialisms effectively.

Specialist engineering surveying competencies

These updates exemplify CICES’s dedication to fostering professional growth and maintaining high standards within the civil engineering surveying industry.

The specialist engineering surveying competencies have undergone more significant enhancements, focusing on incorporating modern practices and technological innovations. The updates include the introduction of two new competencies, bringing the total to six:

  1. Undertake engineering surveying.
  2. Establishment of survey control networks and setting out.
  3. Use and understanding of surveying instruments.
  4. Application of geospatial principles.
  5. Data processing, management and deliverables.
  6. Commercial and planning.

The inclusion of the new commercial and planning competency is a much-needed addition. It highlights the growing importance of commercial management, financial awareness, and strategic planning within the profession, ensuring that surveyors are well-prepared to handle the broader challenges of engineering projects.

Acknowledgements and next steps

The updated competencies will soon be published on the CICES website. I would like to thank Matt Levine and Richard Cooper, along with their respective working groups, for their expertise and dedication in revising these competencies. I would also like to extend my gratitude to Dominic Lane and Holly Browne from the institution for their efforts in bringing everything together. These updates exemplify CICES’ dedication to fostering professional growth and maintaining high standards within the civil engineering surveying industry.
