Utilities and subsurface mapping competencies update
Janos Dobsi, Chair, USMP
THE institution’s utilities and subsurface mapping competencies have been updated by the Utilities and Subsurface Mapping Panel (USMP) in 2023. The last edition was published in 2019 by the CICES, and to keep up with our ever-changing industry, USMP was tasked with updating the document.
Notable changes and additions in the 2023 utilities and subsurface mapping competencies update:
- The competencies are brought in line with the latest PAS 128:2022 publication.
- The expectation of clear and accurate presentation of site reconnaissance data.
- The importance of correct use of both electromagnetic and ground penetrating frequencies and their purposes.
- Health & safety considerations when working with drainage assets, including confined spaces.
- Reference to the TSA’s guide, The Essential Guide to Utility Surveys, for additional detection methods.
In summary, there have been only a handful but essential changes to the document to bring the current competencies up to relevancy in 2023.
