Safely delivering utility location and mapping training in a COVID-19 world

COVID-19 has altered the way we deliver our face-to-face training. Recognising the need to work in a different way, CICES training partners CSTA Global and Blue Hat Services have responded by implementing safety practices to keep delegates and instructors safe, whilst still delivering an enjoyable learning experience.

This takes on many guises from keeping to a closed bubble within an organisation, to providing a tutor delivering a section or all of the course online. There is the flexibility to commence the theory section of a course online then book the practical session at a later date when travel is not so restricted, and learners feel more comfortable doing so.

Safety first

We have recently delivered post-processing courses which have been entirely online. Each course has a risk assessment and our companies have an outbreak plan if required. Safety measures include but are not limited to:

• Periodic lateral flow testing of trainers.
• Separate entry and exit doors if course numbers dictate.
• Open and ventilated training space.
• Individual socially distanced delegate desks, each with NHS Test and Trace app QR code.
• NHS Test and Trace QR code on entry.
• Double temperature check (forehead and wrist) on entry. The two temperatures must agree.
• Manual track and trace information collected for the venue on entry.
• Pre-start self-declaration questionnaire.
• Lower delegate numbers.
• Site cleaning daily.
• Equipment disinfected after use or transfer.
• Sanitisation and face masks freely available.
• Masks can be removed when seated.
• Contactless transfer of paperwork.

Those attending the CICES courses can be reassured that all the necessary safety precautions have been diligently put in place to fully protect delegates and trainers.
