Genna Rourke, chair, Women’s Network shares her journey and experiences in the construction industry

Can you share with us your journey and experiences as a woman in the construction industry? What inspired you to pursue a career in this field?

My journey has been anything but ordinary. Choosing a role as a trainee quantity surveyor over others, I delved into a profession deeply rooted in my family’s history. Little did I know, this decision would set the stage for a career filled with challenges, triumphs, and continuous growth. There were stereotypes from the outset. The pervasive view that I couldn’t comprehend the intricacies of construction, or the assumption I was the designated tea girl were hurdles I confronted head-on. The pressure to be the best in every room led to countless hours of home study and relentless self-reflection, pushing myself beyond perceived limitations.

Progressing swiftly from a trainee to a commercial manager my determination to embrace challenges prevailed. Taking on new responsibilities within Balfour Beatty allowed me to build relationships across various contracts. Mentors played a crucial role in my journey, some exemplary and others challenging.

To aspiring professionals, I offer this advice; have a plan but remain adaptable. Embrace opportunities, understand your worth and have confidence in your knowledge. In the construction industry, where each day is a new project, my journey as a woman has been both challenging and fulfilling. As I continue to navigate this, I am committed to breaking barriers, fostering inclusivity and inspiring others to carve their unique paths in the world of construction.

What significant achievements or milestones have you reached in your construction career that you are particularly proud of?

Achieving chartered status and progressing from trainee to commercial manager are significant milestones. Contributing to commercial improvement initiatives broadened my perspective and the growth of my leadership skills – influenced by both exceptional mentors and challenging bosses – is testament to my commitment to excellence. Recognition from peers and promotions has fuelled my drive to excel in the dynamic construction environment. Advocating for diversity and challenging stereotypes, I am dedicated to contributing to the positive evolution of the construction industry. These milestones collectively represent personal growth and a commitment to making a lasting impact. Looking ahead, I am motivated to continue to push boundaries and inspire others in our dynamic industry.

Could you share a specific challenge you faced and how you overcame it, serving as an inspiration to others?

Navigating challenges in the realm of quantity surveying principles often involves confronting stereotypes and biases. One significant hurdle I’ve overcome revolves around misconceptions tied to gender. Expressing emotions, particularly when upset, was occasionally misconstrued as being overly emotional due to preconceived notions. To address and overcome these challenges, I focused on education and resilience within the commercial arena. I committed to digesting a profound grasp of QS principles. Simultaneously, I developed resilience to navigate situations where stereotypes persisted, showcasing my expertise through performance.

How important is mentorship in the construction sector, and have you had mentors who played a pivotal role in your professional development?

Mentorship holds immense importance, playing a pivotal role in fostering professional growth and development. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to have mentors who have significantly contributed to my journey.

Their mentorship has not only enhanced my technical skills but has also enriched my understanding of the industry dynamics, project management intricacies and effective leadership strategies. Having mentors has offered up perspectives that go beyond what can be learned from books or formal education. They have been a source of inspiration, providing me with the confidence and knowledge to tackle complex issues and make informed decisions. It’s clear that these relationships have been a cornerstone of my growth, allowing me to thrive in the dynamic and demanding construction environment.

What advice would you give to other women considering a career in construction?

For women aspiring to embark on a career in construction, my advice is to embrace challenges, develop resilience and prioritise continuous personal development. Pushing beyond your comfort zone and actively seeking new opportunities is key to personal and professional growth. Cultivate skills such as effective communication, problem-solving and adaptability. Seek mentorship from experienced professionals to gain valuable insights and guidance for tackling unique challenges. Finally, explore literature on personal development, as books on resilience, effective communication and leadership not only provide practical advice but also inspire the determination needed to overcome hurdles. Success in construction goes beyond technical proficiency; it’s about adaptability, leadership, and a commitment to continuous growth.

Construction roles often demand a balance between work and personal life. How do you manage this and do you have any tips for maintaining a healthy work-life integration?

Balancing the demands of construction roles with a healthy personal life is a challenge. I plan strategically, manage my time effectively time and prioritise self-care. Setting clear boundaries is paramount. Establish specific work hours, dedicate focused time to work tasks and ensure a defined endpoint to the work day for personal pursuits. Open communication is also crucial. By conveying realistic expectations about workload and deadlines, a supportive work environment is fostered, allowing for flexibility when needed. Self-care is non-negotiable. Regular breaks, sufficient sleep and engaging in enjoyable activities contribute to overall well-being, ensuring sustained energy levels to take on professional challenges.

Embracing technology for remote work enhances flexibility that facilitates a seamless integration of work and personal commitments. In essence, achieving a healthy work-life integration requires intentional efforts. Clear boundaries, effective time management, open communication and a commitment to self-care collectively contribute to striking this delicate balance.

In what ways do you think diversity, including gender diversity, contributes to the success and innovation within the construction industry?

Diversity, particularly gender diversity, stands as a linchpin for success and innovation within the construction industry. The incorporation of varied backgrounds, perspectives and experiences creates an environment ripe for innovation, creativity and groundbreaking problem-solving.

Diversity enhances the industry’s ability to attract top-tier talent from a broad demographic. A wider talent pool strengthens the industry, fostering vitality and resilience. A diverse workforce ensures that the industry is representative of the communities it serves. This alignment results in projects that are not only socially responsible but also culturally sensitive.

A diverse and inclusive workplace cultivates a sense of belonging and mutual respect among employees. In a globalised market, companies championing diversity gain a competitive edge, as clients and stakeholders increasingly recognise the value of diverse perspectives in delivering innovative and successful projects.

Gender diversity, alongside broader diversity initiatives, serves both as a moral imperative and a strategic advantage for the construction industry, ensuring it remains adaptive, innovative and truly representative of everyone it serves.

Women’s Networking session

January’s Women’s Networking session was a webinar run by Sam Marshall from Sam Marshall Coaching that provided a dynamic and insightful experience for all. The session began with a Slido poll, encouraging attendees to reflect on the one area of their life that, when worked on, could create the most significant positive impact.

The anonymous nature of this poll facilitated an open and honest exploration of various aspects, including relationships, health, professional goals, stress management, and balancing multiple life facets. The session continued with insightful discussions on dealing with problematic relationships, setting boundaries, and lessening the impact of challenging individuals on our well-being. Volunteers bravely participated in a demonstration of resolving problematic or stuck relationships, showcasing a process to alleviate stress and anxiety.

The network is extremely grateful for Sam’s open and insightful contribution and eagerly anticipate future collaborations that empower and inspire our network of women.
