Your membership matters

President Batsetswe Motsumi outlines a few of the benefits of CICES membership

IN March, we will be starting the CICES regional annual general meetings across the country and internationally. It is important that I take this moment to express my gratitude to our regional committee volunteers whose tireless work helps the institution engage with our members and those who are interested in becoming members or just enjoying our seminars and social events.

It fills me with pleasure to remind our members and their colleagues who are not already part of the institution of the benefits of membership. Our members continue to make a difference in their workplaces and the society at large because of their competence and recognition conferred upon them by CICES in the following ways.

Validation of professional competence

Your CICES designation represents external validation of your professional acumen to your industry colleagues. It rewards the work that you committed to, to developing your skills beyond the academic qualifications by becoming a member of CICES. It also offers members a place to build a sense of belonging and the opportunity to access the support materials (CES journal, Knowledge Hub, etcetera) and networks provided within the institution.

Employer recognition

Increasingly, employers and clients are seeking to engage with professionals who possess real-life experience that can be corroborated by CICES. Membership of the institution is a valued and respected status, recognised globally because we continue to demand high standards of competence in civil engineering surveying.

Opportunity to give back

CICES offers many opportunities for its members to exchange knowledge with like-minded professionals through forums such as management and practice committees, getting involved in the regions or taking part in bespoke industry tasks.

CICES is committed to leveraging the specialist expertise of its members to make a difference to the world in subjects such as sustainability, information management, generating value from or managing infrastructure risk using geospatial data.

As part of our quest to add value through collaboration, we are increasingly working with education institutions to support and influence learning outcomes for future generations. I encourage all of you to reach out to your regions and CICES to take advantage of the opportunity to teach a topic or even a module.

Adding value through your network

Being part of CICES gives our members access to regular industry events such as industry lectures, showcase events and social events which helps build your knowledge networks.

Depending on your role within the institution you even get the opportunity to represent CICES nationally and internationally.
