The institution is sorry to hear the news that past-president David Whitehouse has passed away aged 96. David who was chairman (1985-1988 ) and president (1991-1992 ), first became aware of the institution’s activities while working for A.Farr – later to become Bovis Civil Engineering – on the construction of the M3 and M4 motorways.
He was elected a fellow in July 1980, and became involved in its activities from then on.
David joined because he had long realised that most of the serious financial and contractual work in civil engineering was carried out by responsible surveyors whose activities were not recognised by any of the existing organisations. The rapidly growing membership of the Association, as it then was, proved this point.
He attended meetings in Altrincham, and at various hotels up and down the country which he described as ‘always lively affairs’ and they soon became a very good working group, with growing recognition within the industry. He enjoyed submitting regular articles for the institution’s journals and continued to enjoy reading the journal when he retired in 1991.
Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
