President Andy Evans monitors the situation

I RECENTLY attended the GE Basements and Smart Geotechnics event.

I was there for the ‘monitoring’ sessions but took the opportunity for some CPD and brushed up on my knowledge of intelligent props, smart material solutions, the challenges of making basements watertight and the implications of not spending, on relatively cheap foundation treatments but then choosing to cover your basement floor with high end ‘super-Gucci ’ tiles (a.k.a. Everyday short-term thinking).

We discussed applications of lidar, inSAR, NUAR but no real discussions on AR! There was a high-level overview of why AI for engineering isn’t the silver bullet of solution that many think it is.

I disagree with the core message being delivered in this particular presentation from Sakthy Selvakumaran of the CSIC spin-out BKWAI. A heavy emphasis on people, process and THEN technology, in that order, for many of the fringe discussions that were occurring.

I started this by mentioning monitoring – those non-geospatial members amongst us may be wondering why this month’s president’s ramble is worth the espresso break needed to read it, but I point you to the client’s guide to monitoring pulled together by GEPC; you can find that on our new website www.cices.org

Finally, I apologise for all the acronyms, please see me after class if they need translating :- )
