Geospatial Commission report for the property sector

The Geospatial Commission has identified opportunities where improved data and use of location services and applications can unlock innovation across the property ecosystem in a new report Building Better Decision Making – Location data in the property sector.

The report sets out four cross-cutting themes to support the better use of location data, service and applications, including property as a complex interconnected system and the importance of a strategic approach to data access.

These themes arise from an understanding of the role of location data and services across different stages of the property lifecycle from land use and planning, design and construction, buying and selling, safety and operations to the broader themes of retrofit and regeneration.

Working with the Geospatial Commission on the report, the HM Land Registry is committed to unlocking its value and supporting its re-use by making it more FAIR, in alignment with the UK Geospatial Strategy 2030.

CICES signs MoU with IWFM

The institution has announced plans for closer ties with the UK’s largest body for facilities management professionals. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been drafted with the Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management (IWFM). The MoU will provide the basis for further consultations, collaboration and information sharing between the two organisations.

As a result, it will guide any joint actions in areas of common interest, including training, education and professional services. CICES CEO Simon Hamlyn explained the reason for the new partnership: ‘This new MoU with the Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management establishes a formal relationship between both our organisations. It provides a perfect platform for future collaboration on a range of mutually beneficial opportunities, such as professional development and policy initiatives’.

IWFM Chair Mark Whittaker commented: ‘Understanding and collaboration, between the CICES specialists that survey our civil structures and the IWFM professionals who super-connect those buildings and workplaces in operation, can only be a win in facing major challenges ahead.’

All currently applicable CICES MoUs can be viewed on the institution website at www.cices.org.

55 years’ service

Two members of HQ staff celebrated big milestones this year. Last month Joanne Gray, finance manager and company secretary celebrated 30 years of service with the institution.

Earlier this year in March, Darrell Smart, operations director and editor-in-chief, celebrated 25 years of service.

CEO Simon Hamlyn commented: “To have the privilege of two members of staff celebrating 55 years of combined service is remarkable. Their many contributions over these years have been significant in ensuring the success and fortunes of the institution and of SURCO.

Their dedication, enthusiasm and commitment to all of our work and to our members cannot be underestimated – they have every right to be very proud of what they have achieved. It’s testament to the value they both place on working for the institution and SURCO and I am very much looking forward to continuing working with them both in the future”.
