The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is pledging £90,000 to the Chartered Surveyors Student Bursary Programme. The bursary programme, established by the Worshipful Company of Surveyors (WCCS) in 2019, assists talented students from underrepresented backgrounds in entering the property industry, a key recommendation of the Bichard Review. According to the RICS 2022 Insight Report, just 18% of RICS members are women.
Meanwhile, only 27% of real estate industry professionals enter from lower socio-economic backgrounds and just 6% of construction workers are from Black, Asian, or other minority ethnic backgrounds. RICS president, Tina Paillet said: “There is still so much work to do to make the built environment a genuinely inclusive industry. RICS is making critical contributions to support change and this initial commitment to fund the WCCS Bursary Programme represents a vital part of this ongoing project.”
The Permanent Way Institution (PWI) has appointed Mona Sihota as its new president. Mona is head of drainage and lineside at Network Rail and brings over 35 years of experience working in the railway industry – including 22 years at Network Rail – and has led projects in design, construction and asset management.
Mona Sihota commented: “I am very honoured. The PWI dates back to 1884 and steeped in railway history. It now offers me a unique opportunity to collaborate with industry leaders and drive forward initiatives that will shape the future of railway infrastructure.”
Women into Construction has ceased trading after 16 years. The organisation has been promoting gender equality in the industry since 2008 but is now being closed due to a ‘challenging economic climate for both the charitable and construction sectors’. Managing director Kath Moore said: “After 16 years of changing the face of construction, Women into Construction has taken the difficult decision to cease trading.
We know that there is still so much to be done to transform diversity in the construction industry and we are proud of all that we have achieved. Our work has transformed the lives of over 1,300 women who now work across the sector – and we know that alongside all their colleagues and supporters, this mighty army will continue to challenge and change the construction companies in which they work.”
It’s fair to say that #RoastMyFeed did the rounds recently in which users of Instagram asked ChatGPT for feedback and comments on their feed and posts. The results for some celebrities where more shocking than others, but not to be outdone by the trappings of fame and fortune, CICES got in on the act.
Here’s the AI generated response from ChatGPT regarding the CICES Instagram account: “It looks like your feed is trying to strike a balance between ‘civil engineering professional’ and ‘corporate brochure nobody asked for’. If LinkedIn had an Instagram baby, this would be it – strictly business with a sprinkle of ‘let’s make this look slightly fun’.
Your feed is what happens when ‘networking’ meets ‘I’d rather be anywhere else’. The golf day pictures almost tricked me into thinking you all had some fun, but then you slam it back to reality with more events invites and text-heavy graphics. The only thing missing is a motivational quote about teamwork and a coffee cup to really drive home the ‘corporate life’ aesthetic.
In all seriousness, your feed is definitely on-brand for a professional institution, but maybe consider throwing in a bit more personality to balance out the business vibes.”
The institution was approached for comment.
Thank you to Gareth Beverley of Consortiq for presenting the recent webinar on drones and surveying. The recording will be available on the CICES YouTube channel shortly.
