Robin Jones Awards

ROBIN JONES AWARDS

Showcasing the winners of the Robin Jones Awards

Earlier this year the institution presented the Robin Jones Awards. The awards commemorate the life of former president, Robin Jones, who was passionate about supporting early entrants to the industry, regardless of their chosen route and the awards reflects this in their criteria. The awards were open to any CICES student, affiliate, graduate or associate member in full-time or part time education at any of the CICES-approved colleges or accredited universities or through any approved development or accredited apprenticeship schemes.

This year’s winner in the category of ‘overcoming challenges and breaking boundaries through education, training and development’ was Josh Barry. The winner of the category ‘improving equity, diversity and inclusion within civil engineering surveying’ was Avais Ahmed.

Congratulations to this year’s deserved winners.

Avais Ahmed

Winner: Equity, diversity and inclusion

The candidates were given the challenge of providing three words that clearly described their contribution. These words were ‘charismatic, empowered, respectful’.

Comments from the judging panel: “Avais Ahmed describes himself as charismatic, empowered and respected’ and these words felt entirely fitting. What impressed most was how he channels these qualities into creating spaces where everyone has a voice and feels valued. His work in equity, diversity and inclusion is about real change. I do hope Avais will join our Tomorrow’s Leaders Committee and use his insight and passion to help shape our profession’s future. I have no doubt he will leave his mark”.

Josh Barry

Winner: Overcoming challenges

The candidates were given the challenge of providing three words that clearly described their contribution. These words were ‘resilient, ambitious, grafter’.

Comments from the judging panel: “Josh Berry describes himself as resilient, an underdog and ambitious and those words carry real weight when you know his story. What stood out was his quiet determination, the kind that doesn’t shout for attention but wins respect through action. His recognition for ‘overcoming challenges’ is well earned and I do hope he’ll take part in our Tomorrow’s Leaders Committee. I think it will give him the platform to turn that determination into influence. I admire Josh for his ability to talk about his life so openly and I’m certain his story will inspire others to see opportunity instead of limitation”.
